NPW '08 plans
Registration packets for National Police Week 2008 will be mailed in late January to surviving families in the C.O.P.S. database. Agencies that lost an officer in 2007 will receive the same packet their surviving families receive. Participants are encouraged to respond by the March 24, 2008 deadline date.

The official observance of National Police Week is always the week that contains May 15. In 2008, those dates are May 11-17. However, national activities in Washington, D.C. will be held as follows:

Monday May 12
Early Arrival Day

Tuesday May 13
Official Arrival and Check-In, and Annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

Wednesday May 14
1st Day National Police Survivors' Conference and "C.O.P.S Kids/Teens," and Troopers' Tour of the Capital for Surviving Families of 2007

Thursday May 15
National Peace Officers' Memorial Service

Friday May 16
2nd Day National Police Survivors' Conference and "C.O.P.S. Kids/Teens" and Picnic in the Park for Survivors

Saturday May 17
Official Departure Day

National C.O.P.S. sponsors the National Police Survivors' Conference, which includes some meals for participants. However, National C.O.P.S. does not fund air travel or hotel costs. Agencies and local police groups are encouraged to financially assist surviving families so they can take part in the healing activities available in Washington when their officers are honored.

Survivors also learn firsthand that the justice process is lengthy, that many murders are never solved, and that the killer can be acquitted or receive a very light sentence. Even if the killer is convicted and receives a life sentence, survivors don't always feel the emotional relief that they expected.
