Shattered Lives
Copyright 2001 Paul Jones SESAC

Some may be seen dressed in blue,
Others may be wearing black.
They leave their homes every day for me and you,
Sometimes they don't come back.

They take an oath to protect and serve.
They're fathers, husbands, and wives.
But when one dies by another's hand,
What's left behind are shattered lives.

This song is written for them.
Write one like this Eminem.
May God bless the children, husbands, and wives,
Who are left behind to live shattered lives.

Next time you pass someone dressed in blue.
Look in the face and see their eyes.
The only difference between them and you,
Is they're on the edge of shattered lives.

This song is written for them.
Write one like this Eminem.
May God bless the children, husbands, and wives,
Who are left behind to live shattered lives.

The elements of horror and cruelty in such a crime throw us into acute turmoil. We are shocked and confused, perhaps for much longer than for other kinds of loss because such an event is so difficult to comprehend. We are frequently obsessed by an overwhelming need to know the details of our loved one's death and the depth of his or her suffering. We are caught in a kaleidoscope of emotions: rage at the murderer, desire for revenge, sorrow at the pain of our loved one, and intense anxiety about the security of our world.
